History of Dubai

Around the 6th Century, the Sassanids, a Persian dynasaty who had lived in Dubai Creek for ages, were expelled by the Umayyads who brought Islam with them. They re-established trading routes and spread Islam.

In 1766, Dubai was in the middle of local struggles related to power and European imperialism. In 1833, the Bani Yas tribe raided Dubai led by Maktoum bin Butti. In fact, his descendents still rules the emirate at present.

In 1966, petroleum was discovered for the first time and five years later Dubai became the seventh emirate of the newly founded United Arab Emirates.
